eNRG Kayaking’s youth program is making waves this winter with a combination of dedicated training and exciting competitive opportunities. Led by coach and youth program manager Jacob Verhaegh, the team, comprised of 8 to 17-year-olds, is focused on building a strong foundation in paddling skills and river knowledge. Weekly pool sessions at the North Clackamas Aquatic Park provide a controlled environment where these young paddlers can refine essential techniques. Bracing, rolling, and boat control, all crucial skills that can be challenging to master in dynamic river currents, are practiced and perfected in the safety and consistency of the pool. This focused training allows for the breakdown of complex movements, individualized feedback, and confidence building in a fun and supportive atmosphere. It’s exciting to witness the progression of each paddler as they develop their skills and confidence at their own pace, celebrating individual achievements along the way.
Of course, the real joy of kayaking comes alive on the river. The team regularly ventures out onto the Santiam and Clackamas rivers, experiencing the thrill of Oregon’s whitewater rapids firsthand. These trips provide an opportunity to apply skills learned in the pool to real-world scenarios, navigating exciting challenges and enjoying the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
But the learning doesn’t stop there. The team recently traveled to Seattle to compete in a slalom race on the Cedar River, hosted by the League of Northwest Whitewater Racers (http://www.nwwhitewater.org/). Slalom kayaking challenges paddlers to navigate a downstream course marked by “gates” which must be passed through in a specific order. This demanding discipline requires precision, boat control, and quick decision-making, pushing participants to refine their technique and develop strategic thinking on the water. It also provides a fantastic opportunity to build camaraderie and gain experience in a competitive setting.
Beyond the technical skills and competitive drive, the eNRG Kayaking youth program fosters a love for the outdoors and a passion for whitewater sports. Through teamwork, training, and competition, participants gain valuable life skills like discipline, perseverance, and leadership. The program has a lasting impact, with many graduates going on to intern at eNRG Kayaking’s summer camps, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with younger paddlers. This creates a cycle of growth and passion for the sport, ensuring the future of kayaking in the region.
