Callay Boire-Shedd (she/they) grew up immersed in the outdoors, developing a lifelong passion for nature and adventure. While attending Whitman College, Callay discovered her love for kayaking and became an instructor, setting the stage for her continued work in outdoor education. She eventually moved to Eugene to further pursue her passion for teaching recreation.
Callay started her career at the City of Eugene River House Outdoor Center, where she began teaching kayaking. As her expertise grew, she became a Level 4 ACA Swiftwater Rescue instructor. Today, she teaches for Gradient River Essentials and Oregon River Sports, where she’s known for meeting students where they are and creating a safe, supportive environment. Whether working with beginners or advanced paddlers, Callay focuses on building confidence and skill in a way that empowers students to push their limits while feeling secure.
